Odour after unpacking

After receiving a new rug, you may notice a slight, characteristic smell—often described as “chemical” or “factory-like.” This is completely normal and results from the manufacturing and packaging process. The rug has been stored in sealed packaging for some time, which is why the scent may be more noticeable immediately after unpacking. It usually disappears completely within 24–72 hours, depending on the ventilation of the room.

How to speed up airing out

To remove the smell more quickly and refresh the fabric:

  • Unroll the rug and let it “breathe.” Lay it flat in a well-ventilated room.

  • Open windows or turn on ventilation to allow free air circulation.

  • If you wish, lightly sprinkle the surface of the rug with a pinch of baking soda—it naturally absorbs unwanted odors. After about 30–60 minutes, simply vacuum the rug to restore freshness.

Avoid using strong air fresheners or spraying the rug with scented products, as they may leave stains or alter the natural scent of the fibers.

Creases and folds after transport

The creases are caused by rolling and will disappear on their own. If you would like to speed up the process, use the methods below:

Unroll and turn over

Loosely roll the rug in the opposite direction for 2–10 minutes to help relax the fibers.

Lay it flat

Place it on an even surface and put a non-slip mat underneath (this helps “smooth out” waves and improves comfort).

See the non-slip mat
Weigh down the corners

Weigh them down with books or boxes for 12–48 hours (place a cloth underneath to avoid indentations).

Gentle heat

Use a hair dryer from a distance of 20–30 cm, on a low to medium heat setting, keeping it moving. Do not overheat and do not iron.

Steam / Steam cleaner

Apply a short burst of steam above the pile (do not soak).
Do not use on viscose or jute. Always test on a small area or in an inconspicuous spot first.

Time

With normal use, most creases disappear within 3–7 days.

Quick cheat sheet: stains and how to remove them

Stains on rugs can be troublesome and often require quick action to prevent them from penetrating deep into the fibers. Below you’ll find practical tips on how to deal with the most common types of stains at home.

Coffee / Tea

Blot up the excess with a paper towel. Lightly moisten with lukewarm water and a drop of pH-neutral dishwashing liquid, then gently press. Dry thoroughly.

Red wine

Sprinkle with salt or baking soda and leave for 10–15 minutes, then vacuum. Follow with water and a small amount of detergent. Do not use bleach.

Grease / Oil

Sprinkle with baking soda or starch, press gently with a paper towel, leave for 30–60 minutes, then vacuum. If needed, use a spot carpet stain remover according to the care label.

Mud

Let it dry completely, then vacuum. Gently wipe away any residue with a slightly damp cloth, following the direction of the pile.

Pet urine

Blot dry, then apply an enzymatic cleaner for organic stains. Avoid ammonia. Dry thoroughly.

Chewing gum / Wax

Place ice cubes in a plastic bag on the spot until it hardens. Gently lift it with a card. Cover any residue with a paper towel and briefly warm it with a hair dryer—then blot it up.

Always perform a test in an inconspicuous area. Do not use chlorine-based bleach or aggressive solvents.
